Description

Weather-wise, it was a horrible day in NYC. But that couldn’t stop 500 soon-to-be PSP owners to come out and stand in line for hours at the SONY Style store in Manhattan.  Yours truly stood in line with the crowd and got hailed on for hours just to get the opportunity to be part of entertainment history.

Gear Live NPRA month or so ago, I got a call from NPR personality Laura Sydell asking about the impending launch of the Sony PSP. We spoke a bit on the phone, and I was then invited to come to the radio studio to talk at length about Sony’s handheld. The studio segment recording lasted about 20 minutes, and the piece aired the other day. Of course, as with most media channels, segments are cut up. Take a listen to NPR’s report on the PSP launch, and you will even get to hear me mention an outdated way of putting video onto the device!

PSP deal pixel I got my shiny new PSP today at Gamestop. There I was, all psyched up and ready to roll. I was prepared to experience the joy that comes will all things new and electronic - and BAM! Three dead pixels on the right hand side. Many have reported that this is a problem with their PSP’s. This is most likely due to the fact that Sony ramped up production to get a million units ready for the US launch. I just returned from my local Gamestop, and unfortunately they have no PSP’s in stock (surprise!), and they don’t know when they will receive more. I did manage to get them to agree to call me as soon as they get one for exchange. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Not much to say about this one, as it is pretty obvious what’s going on here. The Gizmondo gaming device is pictured here, and it has two problems. First of all, the design just looks atrocious. Secondly, the system Windows software interface has crashed. Come on now. This is apparently why most gaming handhelds fail. Where is the simplicity?

PSP Midnight Launch  I was owned.  I mean, completely owned by the impending launch of this sexy device.  The PSP images swam in my head daily, the unquenchable desire of having it in my hand invaded my dreams, and its capabilities punctuated almost all my conversations.  It is handheld gaming taken to a whole new level, and after a great launch in Japan a few months ago it was finally coming to the US in grand fashion.  Today we’re covering the midnight launch experience in New York City, at the same time that we look at how this thing changed lives.

Playstation 3 Mockup

I hope with all my heart this is not an accurate representation of what the Playstation 3 is going to look like. It just looks cheap, and very breakable. I could see the next generation Playstation supporting the UMD movie format since Sony will be pushing that big time. However, if Sony wants to own our living rooms, they are gonna have to come up with something that might actually fit into our entertainment center. Can’t knock ‘em for trying though, nice mockup.

Xbox If you were thinking of buying an Xbox console, you have some hunting and waiting on your hands. Microsoft has made an announcement on Monday that their gaming console is in short supply due to an unexpected high demand. Stating also that the holiday sales of its Xbox gaming console exceeded expectations, Microsoft is working with its partners to get its console to its gaming public. With E3 approaching and the unveiling of the Xbox predecessor, seems as though Microsoft is placing priority on its next generation console instead of its current success.

NBA Video GameThe NBA has announced a non-exclusive agreement with EA, Take-Two, Sony Computer Entertainment America, Midway and Atari. What this means is more video game choices for sports games fanatics and more competition. This comes as great news since EA has been snatching up exclusive deals with the NFL and the AFL. There is no doubt that NBA video games will be bigger and better thanks to this deal. One thing that sticks out to me, though, is that Sony is the only first party developer to get in on this. Full press release after the jump.

DescriptionThis was made because we all drive Bentley’s, wear Armani suits, and eat at only the finest dining establishments.  At the foolhardy price of 35 G’s this gold and diamond encrusted PSP will do absolutely nothing special that the regular one cant do. Actually, it will definitely get you more chicks. As an added bonus: people won’t think your childish for playing video games - just fashionable.

PSP Video 9

Now that we’re only a few days from getting our hands on a PSP here in the States, PSP Video 9 has hit the scene. PSP Video 9 is a free PSP video conversion and management application. It can convert regular PC video files (avi, mpeg, etc) into PSP video files, as well as manage/copy these PSP video files between your PC and PSP. When combined with another application, Videora + PSP Video 9 form the first PSPcasting solution, allowing you to download, convert and copy video to your PSP, automatically using BitTorrent and RSS technology. No doubt, we will be putting this program through the paces come this weekend.
